SOIL:FIELD of AWARENESS is a conversation with a glimmering ecological shard in North Brooklyn through art, Butoh-puppetry performance, ritual, I-Ching divination, and ecological education. Across two years, the public is invited into growing ecological intimacy with an urban ecological fragment that is the precise point where the largest terrestrial oil spill in the ‘United States’ originates.

Upcoming Events

July 12 - Soil Chromatography Workshop
in partnership with Urban Soils Institute, North Brooklyn Parks Alliance, Newtown Creek Alliance.

We will sample soils from 22 locations at Penny Bridge, and 2 locations at Under the ‘K’ Bridge Park, and visualize their microbial life through a photographic process called ‘chromatography.’ These images of the life-force of the dirt then become ritual discs during the seasonal performance-meditations.

July (date TBD) - Area Tree Walk in the Industrial Business Zone that surrounds Penny Bridge.

July 20 - August 23: Residency on Governor’s Island at SWALE House, Nolan Park
Join us every weekend in creating the Hollow Tree Mandala, Mycelial Web, Soil Ritual Discs, and “Soil Phrases” objects/puppets for the performance-ceremony on September 26-27, 2026.

September 21 - 27: SOIL:FIELD of AWARENESS exhibition at SWALE House, Governor’s Island
Curated by Isabelle Groenewegen.

September 26 - 27: SOIL:FIELD of AWARENESS
Join us for the first of four seasonal performance-meditations. We will deepen the conversation with this glimmering ecological shard by becoming a vibrational field of awareness through movement, sound vibration, and music.
This is a performance with no audience: all are participant-witnesses.

In partnership with North Brooklyn Parks Alliance, Newtown Creek Alliance and Urban Soils Institute.
